American coin silver goblet, likely by a New York maker, c.1857. This attractive goblet has applied beaded borders under the lip and on the pedestal base. The body has Repousse floral and foliate decorations and a large shell cartouche containing the inscription: Awarded by the American Institute To Levi Van Vleit For the best pair of Stall Fed Cattle 1857. Van Vleit was from Clinton, Dutchess County and he was also awarded $15 in cash. This special goblet is 6 1/2" tall, 3 3/4" in diameter and weighs 176 grams or 5.7 ozs. Troy. Inscribed as described above, the soft, warm, original antique finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
